What are MOD, XM files?
MOD and XM music files have been created in a special
way using a combination of custom samples and "patterns" of note data.
This way of writing and distributing music files are often called "tracker
music", referring back to the programs (Soundtracker, Noisetracker, Protracker,
Fasttracker, Impulsetracker, Modplug Tracker, etc) that composers use to create
these files.
"Tracker music" goes all the way back
to the 1980's and computers such as the Commodore 64 and Amiga. Today, tracker
music files are often used by producers of video games and mobile games who
wish to keep their files small. Because of the way the format works, MOD and
XM music files are very memory- and filesize efficient. A full music track with
custom instruments can be 100 kb or even smaller.
The MOD file format contains 4
audio channels of 8-bit sound. The XM (Fasttracker) file format
can contain many more audio channels and 16-bit samples. As a result, XM files
are often somewhat larger and contain more intricate orchestrations and more
layers of instruments etc.
These files require special playback routines
in order to use them. These files will not import into most
media production applications. Please, only purchase a license for these tracks
if you are familiar with the file format and your project already has a MOD/XM
playback feature! We do not provide support for playing back MOD/XM files in
your application. We only supply the music files & license to you.
MOD and XM files can easily be converted to .IT
(ImpulseTracker) format by loading the file into ModPlug
Tracker, changing the Song Type to ImpulseTracker and saving it back out.
The file sizes we have specified
for each song below are unzipped/uncompressed. Generally, these files compress
to about half the size with .zip or other similar compression. So keep in mind
that if you see a file below specified as 100 kb, it will most likely only add
about 50 kb to your distributable files after you have compressed them with
.zip or similar.
Legal
Like with all other music on this site, you may
only use the music in your project after you have purchased a license.
