Donizetti, Gaetano
Gaetano Donizetti
November 29, 1797 – April 8, 1848

Gaetano Donizetti was a composer from Italy. He is best known for his opera pieces, although he did compose string quartets, orchestral pieces, and some church music.

Donizetti began his career as a choirboy, and attended the new Lezioni Caritatevoli school in Bergamo. He studied counterpoint and fugue there, and it was from these beginnings an interest in opera was ignited. He produced some chamber music and religious pieces, and later worked in Naples for two decades as a composer and conductor.

The opera Anna Bolena, which premiered in 1830, brought him sudden and international fame. He wrote L'elisir d'amore shortly afterwards, and Lucia di Lammermoor, two of his most famous works.

He later moved to Paris, and wrote successful operas in French, including La fille du Régiment, and La favorite.

Donizetti’s work is known for its broad style, and its musical and technical demands.
