Music is definitely Brazil's most essential cultural expression, and has influenced
the whole world, from Jazz to Electronica. Brazilian music is a combination
influenced by African, European and Amerindian cultural heritages, in such diverse
ways that is almost impossible to classify it under one single genre.
Its most prominent and/or traditional styles are Samba, Choro, Baião,
Maracatu, Forró, Frevo, Bossa Nova, MPB, Axé and Sertanejo. And
there are also contemporary experiments that led to current urban styles such
as Rio's Funk, Brazilian Hip Hop, a world-relevant Electronica scene and Contemporary
MPB, which mixes traditional styles with clever and inspiring Electronica elements.
You'll often hear the Violão (nylon acoustic guitar) and the Pandeiro
(tambourine) in the majority of Brazilian styles, and also the Cuíca,
the Tamborim, the Cavaco, the Zabumba and the Caxixi, among many other typical
instruments.
The most internationally relevant popular Brazilian musicians are probably
Tom Jobim, João Gilberto, Astrud Gilberto, Bebel Gilberto, Caetano Veloso
and Gilberto Gil and recently Lenine and CéU attracted a lot of attention
for their contemporary cross-overs.
On this page you'll find a nice selection of Brazilian stock music. We hope
you'll enjoy it.
